Shiraz Cabernet 53/46 South Australian 2006 Smells like: ripe berries, pepper Price: $8-12 ABV: 13.5% Tastes like a hyperbola: sweet berry hurries down the throat and echoes back up in the key of citrus. Distinctly more sour and less Lucullan than its nose promises, much like a girl in a too-padded bra. Pleasantly earthy further down the glass, but nothing to redeem disparity between perfume...

Zinfandel/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon Californian 2007 Smells like: Juicy Juice spilled on schoolyard dirt Price: $8-12 ABV: 13.5% The tip of the tongue is frontally assaulted with something like liquid Smarties: jammy plum and cherry and grape with a bit of light spice. Call it chutney. Almost too drinkable: no length, even when palate is soaked. Charming mineral flavors follow jam onslaught....
